Confidence band
An honest range around an estimate, reflecting how much evidence sits behind it.
A confidence band is the range an estimate could reasonably fall in, given how much and how good the evidence behind it is. It replaces a single number that pretends to a precision nobody has.
The practical value is that it makes thin evidence visible. An estimate built on three comparable posts and one built on three hundred can produce the same midpoint; only the band tells you that the first one is nearly meaningless and the second is worth acting on. Wide band, low sample, low stakes decision only.
Treat a band as a floor on your uncertainty, not a ceiling. It captures the variation the data can see. It cannot capture the thing the data has never encountered: a new format, a new audience, a change in how the platform distributes content.
Where this comes up
Four tiers of content evidence, from public view counts to sales data: what each can prove, what it can't, and how to know which one you're holding.
The difference between a number a system counted and a number someone told you, and why almost every content report quietly mixes the two together.
